History

The Homestead School was built in the late 1930's as part of the Works Progress Administration program. This program was part of the Roosevelt Administration's idea to stimulate the economy by providing work and homes for displaced miners and farmers. The school was originally set up to accommodate grades 1-12. In 1963, high schools through the county were consolidated, leaving grades 1-8. Today the school consists of kindergarten though eighth grades.
